Celebrating births and mourning deaths are life-changing experiences. Yet we don't get to remember or learn from them. Our own life passages - including starting or ending relationships, moving, or making job or career changes - provide great, but painful, learning experiences.
So why do we put ourselves through so much pain? It can be as simple as wanting a happier life. Or as complex as wanting to make a difference.
The recent passing of George Carlin shows just how much difference one person can make. George once said that, "The future will soon be a thing of the past." And so it goes. So long, George. We'll miss you.
Fans from around the world have left condolences on the profile page of PeopleJam Expert Kelly Carlin-McCall (George's daughter). In response, Kelly has written this touching - and frank - letter.
Instead of doing great things on earth, perhaps you're more concerned about the afterlife. The Squirrel Nut Zippers said it best in their song ,"Hell":
In the afterlife,
you could be headed for the serious strife.
Now you make the scene all day,
but tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay.
Comedian Adam DeVine believes in an afterlife, as he explains in this funny and thought-provoking video. Adam has - shall we say - unconventional views about what happens in Heaven.
Why can't we just be Zen about our lives, be happy now with what we have and not worry about the past or the future? Such bliss rarely happens for most of us. It's against human nature. Yet we all have our moments. With that in mind, we'll leave you with this Zen moment from Kelly Carlin-McCall.
Have a great life - and afterlife!
Matt Edelman, CEO Quote of the Week:
"Seize the day...before it seizes you!"
Completely true. Living for today is my policy. I don't care about tomorrow nor do I worry about the past. No one's come back fomr heaven or hell to prove they exist. This might be our only chance at life and I'm not going to waste it trying to be a saint. But that doesn't mean I go around acting like the hand of Satan! I'm just saying that as long as we live life the way it suits us without hurting anyone, I'm sure no one will mind.
