It seems like many of us forget all about healthy eating and fitness when we are on a vacation. Don’t give yourself a license to eat when you’re taking time off or traveling. Food has the same nutrition content when you are on vacation as when you aren’t. This does not, however, mean that you cannot relax and enjoy yourself.

Remember though, relax and enjoy yourself does not equal “pig out” or “forget to exercise”. Why does taking a vacation mean a vacation from common sense? Think about it – you’ll feel quite guilty when you are done. Why do that to yourself? I know I don’t like the “I shouldn’t have eaten all of that food” conversation with myself, so I avoid it completely. Don’t have the willpower? Try some of these suggestions:

Stay with small portions and don’t snack. Stay away from high-calorie smoothies, fruit concoctions, or cocktails. If you must indulge, don’t overdo it.

Go for walks every morning. This is especially great if you are staying in and oceanfront or mountain resort. Take in the sights and sounds of your location.

Golf, surf, scuba, swim, hike, or otherwise move around! You can always take a vacation that is intentionally active as well.

Stay away from the late-night snacking or meals after a night of reveling. Ask yourself if you’re really hungry or just looking for “drunk food”. If you do “need” drunk food, watch your portions and try not overdo it!

Don’t completely limit yourself. Allow yourself a meal or day where you have some real comfort food and drink. Don’t feel guilty about it afterward. Just don’t make it your entire vacation if possible. If you do blow it, don’t beat yourself up about it. Remember how unpleasant this is for next time and move on!

How do you keep control on vacation?

You made your points, but in some ways I disagree. I mean vacation is all about forgetting those things you MUST do every single day. If I want a high calorie smoothie or a special snack on vacation, I am going to have it and when I return home then I will work through it. Sometimes we can take fitness to extremes in my opinion. Remember, we only get one life !
