“If we were talking to you on your first day of physical experience, we could be of great advantage to you because we would say, “Welcome to planet Earth. There is nothing you cannot be or do or have. And your work here—your lifetime career—is to seek joy.” ~ Esther and Jerry Hicks from Money, and the Law of Attraction

Love that. How’s that for a career choice?!? Where was the career counselor in high school/college who said, “You? Your lifetime career? Definitely to seek joy. Yep, that’s it. Seek Joy.” :)

I didn’t have that experience. (Somehow I wound up as an accountant out of UCLA. Huh?) Thankfully we’ve got Esther & Jerry to help guide us now. :)

Now, you might want to re-read that quote. And then take it LITERALLY. They truly believe that your PRIMARY job is to seek joy. Think that’s nonsense? Well… you might want to re-consider it.

Joseph Campbell and Carlos Castaneda come to mind here. First, Esther & Jerry have been deeply influenced by Joseph Campbell—the 20th century mythology guru who brought us the “hero’s journey” and the admonition to “Follow your bliss!” (See Notes on him, btw.)

Now, while he says “Follow your bliss!” they say, “Follow your joy!” Same thing. Here’s the interesting thing: Did you know where Campbell got his “Follow your bliss!” line? (Hint: It’s straight from Hinduism.) Campbell was a scholar of Sanskrit and here’s how he describes it in “Power of Myth”:

Now, I came to this idea of bliss because in Sanskrit, which is the great spiritual language of the world, there are three terms that represent the brink, the jumping-off place to the ocean of transcendence: Sat, Chit, Ananda. The word “Sat” means being. “Chit” means consciousness. “Ananda” means bliss or rapture. I thought, “I don’t know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don’t know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being.” I think it worked.”

(That’s hot.) Continuing this Follow Your Joy as the key to success business, Carlos Castaneda likes to say that any path is one of a million paths and that we shouldn’t follow a given path unless it has “heart”—that is, unless it feels good… unless it gives us joy… unless we’re following our bliss. He says, “But how will I know for sure whether a path has a heart or not?’ ‘Anybody would know that. The trouble is nobody asks the question.”

How about you? You asking the question? And do you have the courage to make a career out of living the answer? (Good. :)

Another beautiful post Philosopher! It is our ONLY job to find ways to feel joy. All the rest follows from that *simple* task.

That is my career. Feeling joy. no matter the circu,stances around me. Or at least finding ways to be moving toward joy. I love my J-O-B.

Many blesings,
Sheri

hey merri - It's DEF a challenge!! most people, unfortunately, give up and quit following their dream.

hey smojica - yep. i think the biggest issue is the COURAGE to say what you *really* want (most of us know deep down inside :) and then GO FOR IT. :)

Well said. The problem is, many of us don't have the personal mastery skills required to know what WE want and HOW to create it.

I definitely agree in principle. It is difficult, however, for most of us to know what we want to do when we graduate from high school if we haven't had good guidance from those surrounding us. It's important to do what we love and enjoy. If you're a people person, hang with people. If not, don't and be re-energized by your time alone. If you're an organizer, get someplace where you can organize, etc. I think my hubbie and I are still learning this.

@chelle123 - we all have our own path and that's awesome you love your job!

@shanr - who said anything about "running away from everything that doesn't give you joy?" You LOVE where you are and know you are evolving to more. :) and YES to everything else you said! :)

@heathcole - YES YES and YES! :)

KUDOS! If you do not like what you are doing, how are you ever going to be happy doing it at least 40 hours a week! You must focus on joy in life, as any other focus will only make you miserable!

Following your joy is definitely desirable, but I think you need balance in your life. If you are always searching for joy and run from everything that brings anything but joy, you will never experience the lows of life that give those high points their defining moments. No, you should not surround yourself with a miserable job and coworkers, or family and friends who are unsupportive, but I think what truly matters in life is that you know the source of your joy and how to draw from that even in the worst situations.

I think following your joy as a career would be terrific! I love my job and it is rewarding but I admit it sure isn't making mew rich. I'm perfectly content though.

@triplecrown - I'd propose we CAN always make it profitable to follow our joy if that's what we're looking for (vs., for very few of us who choose to renounce material stuff). In fact, proving it's possible (in my case, to get paid to read/write/be a better human being!) and helping people do it is a big part of my purpose. fun! :)

@amanda - cool!!!!

I agree with this. I have my own farm and I have made it fairly profitable. I really love doing it and that is what keeps everything going!

It is not always profitable from an income standpoint to follow your joy, however if not in profession - at least in life, head towards the things/people that bring you joy! If you make that your life's goal, you will overflow with joy!
