"Your purpose is to act on the resources God gives you. If God gives you a bucket of fish, you have to distribute those fish. If you don't, they're going to rot, attract a bunch of flies, and start stinking up your soul." ~ Russell Simmons from Do You!

Love that.

Don't believe Simmons? How about Joseph Campbell?

--> "To refuse the call means stagnation. What you don't experience positively you will experience negatively."

Not good enough? How about Abraham Maslow?

--> "What one can be, one must be!"

Still not enough? What about Jesus (from the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas)?

--> "If you bring forth what is inside you, what you bring forth will save you. If you don't bring forth what is inside you, what you don't bring forth will destroy you."

We have gifts to give to the world.

Let's (!!!) GIVE THEM!!!

WOW! I'm reading this first thing in the morning, and it feels great! I love inspirational quotes, and never get tired of reading them, again and again. Thanks! You made my day.

What a great list of quotes. Although you didn't add too much to the quotes, they are powerful enough to just stand by themselves. I am always looking for great quotes and I was happy to read your blog. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reading the quotes.

What a nice uplifting blog post! Funny how things can be so simple when put a certain way! I agree~ lets give our gifts to the world!

WONDERFUL quotes, and I do not even believe in a traditional God per se. I truly believe that if you ignore your calling in life, you are ignoring your life and merely existing. GREAT way to start my afternoon.

I agree that ideally one should use his/her potential to the fullest, but this is not always easy because of the unexpected problems we encounter everyday. I prefer a more relaxed point of view because I think keeping expectations very high would result in big disappointments.

@hc - awesome! :)

@Q - i hear ya. but maslow comes to mind for me: “If you deliberately plan on being less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you'll be unhappy for the rest of your life." ☺

and definitely not always easy. that's why joseph campbell calls it a "hero's journey"!!

to our hero's journeys

I've always liked Goethe's "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it"

Quiescence, I was reminded of Thomas Merton when I read your comment.

I definitely love your thoughts and quotes and will be following you here and on your site. Just today a friend called to tell me my friendship was the best gift she's ever had and I had been worried I couldn't find a gift good for her. Sometimes our talents, our experiences, etc. are the things worth giving away and are meaningful. Thanks for the reminder.

Wow. Nice quotes. Its about 8 o'clock here, and I am inspired. I'm thinking about going outside in the rain, and giving away money. Thanks Brian.

Wonderful quotes. I know that we should find our own personal meaning in the quotes, but I think the blog would have been enhanced if you told us what these quotes mean to you. They did give me some interesting food for thought.

Giving generously of yourself - your time, your talents, your gifts - will be one of your greatest joys in life. Choosing to bless others ends up being a gift to yourself in many ways. It is not an easy way to live, you will encounter negative circumstances, however, it is a way to live your life fully and spread joy & love! Awesome!

@wafflsz-OMG. Love that quote from goethe!!!
@adam-thx for your support! YES!!! giving our love and talents are so often overlooked and so valuable. and too cool re: your friend.
@axbhoff- :)
@kel-thx for the feedback! I agree COMPLETELY with the quotes and figured they were pretty powerful all by themselves so left it at that! :)
@triplecrown-beautifully said!

Good quotes. Although I do not believe in the conventional God, inspiration from any source is good. The first one is very well put. At times it can be very trying to see things in a positive light, and the negative can get you down. Be yourself and let your true self shine through.

krm's picture

This is a great motivational blog as it truly reinforces our purpose for life. Sometimes our trouble is not recognizing talents that we posess.

PhilosophersNotes's picture

@meesha - me either re: the traditional God and YES on letting our true selves shine thru!

@krm - yepperz. and then sometimes our trouble is not UTILIZING our talents. then the flies start coming. :)

to givin' away all our fish,

I do believe in God, and firmly believe in using the gifts He gives us. To smother those gifts is a true loss. To use them is to be fulfilled in a way you won't find any other way!

amen, raleyfam! :)

I think there are far too many people who need to read this. So many people are caught up with themselves, and don't even take the time to think of how they can help others. Then, when something happens to them they automatically expect someone to help them. Great list of quotes!

PhilosophersNotes's picture

thx, tiffany! at the end of the day, it ALWAYS comes back to that (wonderful) person looking at us in the mirror, eh? WE need to live these truths! :)
