What exactly is it about handbags that have women all around the world going crazy? My mom believes that if someone was to snatch her handbag, they'd be stealing her life. My sister's handbag is always full no matter what size it may be.

Okay yes... when I need something I can usually find it in her bag or in one of them at least, but is the hand the new survival kit for the urban woman? Does size really matter when it relates to accessories?

All I need to get by is my keys, cash, cellphone and Id and most of that fits nicely in my jeans pocket. Yes... I know I'm a lesbian but... I'm not a butch lesbian.

Here's a list of just SOME of the things I have found in a woman's handbag:

1. purse
2. sunglasses
3. old receipts for 2 years ago
4. sweets
5. hand wipes
6. tampons
7. perfume
8. make-up
9. hairbrush
10. keys
11. date-book
12. I.D
13. cellphone
14. tissues
15. pills which made my medicine cabinet look shameful
16. hand lotion
17. face-cream
18. make-up removal cream
19. bra
20. nail-varnish
21. cheque book
22. and a to-do list

How is this even possible? It was like watch a live version of Mary Poppins without the bedroom lamp coming out of the bag.

I also don't get why they have to be so expensive... you spend so much cash on a beautiful new bag but it just ends up being filled with crap.

And WHAT is an evening bag suppose to hold? I went out with my sister one night and my pants was really tight so I asked her to keep my cellphone in her bag... She couldn't even get her cellphone into her bag... so I carried my cell around the entire night... why did she buy the smallest bag in the freaking world??? It matched her dress and shoes

Bags are like cellphone they get smaller every year but still they're able to hold a bunch of crap...

I think I'll stick to keeping it simple.. if it doesnt fit in my bag, I don't need it.

Ok, maybe not great advice for me (since I tend not to carry a purse), however great advice for my significant other. At times I wonder if her purse is going to explode in the middle of the street with so much garbage. It is a wonder that she's never thrown her back out carrying so much extra weight! Down sizing and limiting what you carry is key, ladies.

I like the pictures. I try to buy a relatively small purse so I can limit the amount of stuff I put in it, but it always seems to fill to bursting with the useless stuff that the blogger mentioned. Any ideas on how we can get rid of all the junk and KEEP it out?

I, myself love purses a lot, I find them cheap at the thrift store, I do need one to hold all my stuff though. Funny article still!

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a hand bag freak. I love them. I adore them. I long for them. My eyes light up like a Christmas tree at the sight of a beautiful, perfect bag. Alas, I'm also a tightwad to the ultimate extreme. I work very hard to get as many bags as I can for as cheaply as I can. People probably think I spent a lot on them, but I don't.

This is awesome, and it made me laugh. I'm not much of a purse carrier, I think it's just something women do. Something about us being cluttered and absent-minded perhaps. Mine was a diaper bag, but now it's just a "throw all the stuff I don't have a spot for" bag.

Cute. There really is something about our purses... Since I started riding my Harley I've learned that I don't need to cart all that shit around. My coat has two pockets and that's enough to hold the bare necessities. But maybe that's 'cause I'm old enough that my appearance isn't my number one priority, so no make-up. And my bike does my hair, so no brush... Buy your purses at THRIFT STORES, girls. Genuine leather, basement prices!

I am a fashion diva myself but one thing I have never been able to join is the purse fanatics clique. I never understood how someone can pay $300 plus for a purse and then not even know when or how to wear it. These ladies take them to the gym, the store, PTA ,meeting, etc. and their attire is busted yet they have this nice purse on their arm. Hell I invest in Coach, I don't buy it! My purses come out only for special occassions. I look like I belong on Rodeo Drive but truth is I am a frugal diva. I shop at thrift stores for good name brands and save the real money to travel Europe. Very good article.

I am just like your sister - the bigger my purse the more junk I cart around. The purse contents have changed over the years - make up has been replaced with Matchbox cars and underpants (and those aren't mine from a late night out - they are toddler sized with extra just in case absorbency!).

interesting. it seems that most women handy bags are there for 'just-in-case' scenarios. i suppose thats good to be prepared. but how much of that is just over worrying about what might happen versus what you might actually need (id, keys etc). anyhow, great post.

"Be prepared" is not just a Boy Scout motto. Moms around the world practice that every day and guess where all the stuff goes? I am a mom of four and I can tell you right now there are more Band-Aids, Toys R Us coupons, gum, crayons, diaper rash ointment, Kleenex, and toddler sized sunglasses in my purse than in a small drugstore. I think what you carry in your bag corresponds to what stage of life you're in. Hopefully, someday, I'll get back to the bra in the purse days. Thanks for making me laugh.

I'm not much of a girlie girl, but I always like having a nice looking handbag. Anything and everything can be cheap and expensive. I just like having nice bags that is comfortable, pretty, and big enough for all my stuff. I just like having the room to take anything that I need. Haha, I guess I am the type of person that the blog is talking about.

Hilarious! I could not agree more, and I know my partner feels the same way. All she ever carries is a lip balm in her pocket when we go anywhere and I carry the wallet. LOL! My mother-in-law always has this huge purse full of everything like you listed. Its so heavy I wonder how she doesn't have a dent in her shoulder. I think that some women feel they need to be prepared for everything, but I feel that is the purpose of convenience stores!

Have you been digging in my bag? :) I am totally guilty of storing anything and everything in there, from dental floss to spoons. I just cleaned out some receipts today...some from 2006, some so old the writing was gone. I love a great bag, but with my penchant for carrying anything that will fit, I tend to buy cheap.

syamg's picture

I do love bags, however I only have three, and they're cleaned out regularly since I rotate between them. I do have to admit that my work purses are usually pretty well equipped with things like nail polish/clippers, small band-aids (I'm a klutz) and such. Hey ya never know when you're gonna need it! (At least that's what my mom taught me, lol)

chelle123's picture

What a funny article but so true! I admit to sometimes having a stuffed bag. For me it is mostly stuff the kids give me to hold on to for them. Do I need it all? Probably not. My sore shoulder will thank you for the reminder to clean mine out!

littlethumbjuice's picture

I used to completely agree with you about not needing it if it didn't fit in my purse. I also used to laugh at friends who carried "purses" too small to fit anything but their lipstick in. Then I had children, and now I could not live without my ten gallon purse complete with baby wipes, toy cars, fruit snacks and sometimes even a shirt change for me. I realize this is what a diaper bag is meant for but my 3 year old isn't in diapers any more, carrying a purse and a diaper bag is way too much, and I have had too much food spilled on me or smeared into the hair of my child to ever leave home without all of those things. So while some people may have strange purse habits, others may have completely legitimate reasons for that Mary Poppins bag.

I'm definitely the same way as you... All I carry are my keys, wallet, and phone, which can all fit in my pants pocket. I do have one purse that I carry if I don't have pockets, and is has gotten filled up with so much junk over the years... The stuff just accumulates! I think I have old prescriptions and receipts, melted chapstick, stale gum, and all sorts of junk in there!

I stopped carrying handbags long ago because I would lose them almost everytime. The people at the DMV were beginning to know me by name when I walked in to get replacement ID.

My grandmother on the other hand, couldn't live without one. She carried so much stuff in it she actually pulled a shoulder muscle and she had to downsize on doctor's orders. When she emptied out her bag, not only did she have the usual feminine arsenal but, get this, a HAMMER AND SCREWDRIVER. No wonder she pulled a muscle.

handybags are cute. the end.

I hate carrying bags and I still buy them as a compliment to the outfit. Sometimes people want to remain up to date with fashion. Personally, I buy it if it catches my eye. I like bags when they are necessary but they do get in the way. A lot of the times the contents can fit in a pocket.

elysejay83's picture

This is cute!

Seriously though, I can't walk to the bathroom without my bag! Sometimes I carry a clutch but most of the time I carry a my big black snake skin Dior! Its huge and I love it! I can put a change of shoes in it! and anything else I need! I don't have pockets too often! I hate when when have fitted jeans on with a phone or comb print in their butt pocket! Bags are accessories and very useful for us at the same time! i recommended this blog. I thinks its funny because people always ask whats going on in my bag!!!
