If You Answer "Yes" To Any Of These Questions, We Have The Solutions For You:
1) Do you use a desktop or laptop computer and do not currently have the proper ergonomic computer set-up? Are you unsure if your computer is set-up correctly?
2) Are you a computer user and do not currently use proper computer accessories that allow you to match your work area to fit you and your unique body size and shape?
3) Do you currently use the "ordinary" cheap computer mouse that was shipped with your computer?
4) Do you work on your computer more than 3 days a week and for more than 4 hours a day?
5) Do you have a physical manifestation of bodily stress or fatigue from using your computer such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, carpal tunnel syndrome or other cumulative trauma disorders, headaches, eye-strain or other ergonomic problems?
The Problem: Computer users with poor ergonomic set-up of their computer often suffer from fatigue, stress, pain and even injury, making work and recreational activities difficult or painful. Many struggle in pain or discomfort all day due finding little or no relief.
Attempts To Fix The Problem: You may have tried make shift efforts to improve your computer set up to reduce your struggle- bought another computer mouse, placed a phone book under your computer monitor, rest your feet on a box, even tried moving the mouse or keyboard to different positions and yet--nothing worked, or made everything worse!
Why Those Attempts Failed: The problem with most desktop or laptop computers and work areas is their lack of adjustability and inherently poor ergonomic design. Most computers and "ordinary" computer accessories were designed to provide communication interfaces, the design did not have the computer user in mind. Hence it is difficult or impossible for you to fit your body to match the dimensions of the computer and these ordinary computer accessories. The result is your body is forced into awkward positions, positions that our bodies were not designed to be in for long periods of time--your body gets over used, you feel stressed, tired, have soreness, pain and even chronic injury. Most attempts to fix the problem fail because they do not address the following 3 requirements.
Proper computer set-up for your laptop or desktop computer requires 3 things:
1) Ergonomic positioning of the computer and computer accessories specific to the individual and based on postural guidelines. Not everyone has the same body size, shape and weight and yet computer work areas are often designed for the 'average' person. There is no average person!
2) Computer accessories that are designed with a focus on ergonomics, which means they provide adjustability, promote proper positions of the joints, minimize the stress/pressure to your body and work on the body and enhance blood flow to your muscles, tendons and joints.
3) Computer accessories that are reviewed and approved by clinical and ergonomic experts and have a proven record in reducing bodily stress, pain, injury and can be supported by clinical research.

Amazing post and fascinating subject. A print out, save to disk, bookmark, favorites kind of of posting. Wonderful concepts approached and thank you for the brilliant ideas. Ergonomics is a subject that deserves more attention, definition, and 'cured'. I look forward to reading more of your postings!
I feel like this is something that no one ever thinks about. We've all come to expect fatigue and pain after long days on a computer. After typing all day it seems natural that your neck and wrists are strained. But maybe if we payed more attention, and personalized our set-up, we would be much more comfortable with our computers.
What a great and timely article! I have lots of problem with my back when I'm on the computer. I'm going to try your suggestions.
I'm on my computer all the time for work, research, communication, entertainment, etc that I definitely found this article to be very informative. It's kind of funny because I was actually considering buying all those new (expensive) things for my home office so that I won't have those ergonomic problems. Now, I'm going to try out those tips and keep myself healthy while using a computer all the time.
I like that attention is payed to the size and shape of the person. This is usually completely ignored. Great work!
Ergonomic saved me from having to have CTS surgery. After being diagnosed with CTS, my doctor told me to get an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, as well as wrist rest and mousepad with wrist rest. To date, I have not had my CTS worsen and it is in fact less painful. I would highly suggest that everyone, symptomatic or not, make their workspace ergonomic!
Really interesting facts about computer ergonomics. Maybe i should change my set up to relax my wrist and back.
Thank you for the sound advice. I am surprised that with how often we are on the computer now a days how little this subject comes up.
I totally agree. I worked a particular job for nearly 8 years. During my 8-hour shift I was on a computer approx 7 hours per day. Believe me, it does take a toll on your arms, wrists, neck, back and eyes. Look at some of our senior citizens that were not warned about workplace hazards decades ago. You can see the "work" effects in many older men & women today. I am in my younger 30s and I believe we will see "computer work" effects in my generation as the decades go by. Thanks for the post!
